Transcript of conversations with John Devitt, academic and reviewer about his lifelong passion for the theatre. A fascinating and entertaining insight into Dublin theatre over the course of thirty years provided by Devitt’s vivid reminiscences and astute observations.

John Devitt was born in Dublin in 1941. He was educated by the Christian Brothers at O’Connell’s School and was a graduate (English and Classics) of UCD. His teaching career began in 1963 in Glenstal Abbey. He later taught at St. Joseph’s CBS in Fairview before becoming head of English at the Mater Dei Institute of Education in 1979, a post he held until his retirement in 2006. He regularly reviewed books, films and plays for a range of Irish journals and newspapers, radio and television programmes. The theatre was a lifelong passion, one he shared generously. John Devitt died in June 2007.
